So this is Christmas...

Looking back at this past year, I am thankful for another chance to get caught up and back on track. Ringing in 2009 was tough, but I was hopeful for the unknown. My husband was unemployed, our home on the market, we were not moving to California and I would be starting a new job in a new department outside of my comfort zone. I didn't know what to expect. I was very heartbroken but I reminded myself it would be a chance to start over.

This year had its bumps along the way, but it became a turning point. We finally got a GOOD real estate agent who would do anything to sell our home or just listen to me vent about our home not selling. He has been patient, kind and a believer that our home will sell in 2010. Let's hope that is the case. The hubs finally got a job! WOOHOO! Yippee! It also could not have come at a better time since his unemployment was about to run out and panic was about to set in. I have said this before, but I will say it again - I don't wish for anyone to lose a job. I have seen what it can do to a person or a family and no one, I mean NO ONE should have to go through it ever. Ever. We decided to stay in Charlotte and make some new friends. They have come in many ages and locations, but we are grateful to have them to lean on as well as our pals who are far away. I found my lost passion for photography this past year as well. It has been refreshing to find something I loved and lost, to come back. I can't wait to see what 2010 will look like as I continue to set my goals and follow my dreams. And with my current job in a sweet spot, I am lucky to have new responsibilities to carry me into 2010. It will be challenging, but I am happy to have the opportunity to learn new skills.

With all that said, I am welcoming in this new year in a better place. We might not be on the coast we planned on, but we are happy to have a place to call home. We are a drive away from most of our family and a phone call away from the rest. We might not know what this year will bring, but I do hope for more travel, a new home and make a few less pounds on the scale. That isn't asking for too much is it? Happy Holidays and here's to 2010. :)

Weekly catch-up? More like Yearly.

Another blog to follow. But for now - -

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: FULL
Books I've finished: Julia Child's life story (with Full Moon in the wing)
News story that stuck with me: If I hear another story about Tiger Woods or Health Care I might yell. Enough all ready!
*NEW* Ear Worm: (Otherwise known as the song stuck in my head this week): Talking Heads mostly and the thought of a blog from a widow who uses the lyrics from their music. My heart goes out to her. I can't imagine how she feels right now and how strong she is to share such a piece of her heart via her blog. Try not to cry or be thankful when reading this: http://sumstarles.blogspot.com/

Body:
Workouts this week: Walking the dogs when I get home has been all I seem to get done. I'll be back at the gym for sure after the holidays.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: I am trying to start to take vitamins along with my super dose of D. I found out that I am lacking and have to get back up to normal. Here's to finally figuring out what the heck was wrong with me being sleepy and run down all.the.time.

Looking forward:
As cheesy as it sounds, I am looking forward to the holidays and seeing everyone near and dear to me. This is the first time in seven years that I actually get to see my brother before the holidays. I also won't have to run to the mall unless I plan to shop sales after x-mas comes and goes. I really love having a talent I can spend my time doing instead of greeting shoppers. Thank goodness I found a calling I love.

I heard you late last night

Last week was the worst sleep I think I have ever had mostly due to the hubs chatting it up in his sleep. He had one dream where we thought I was playing a joke on him so when I tried to wake him up from deep sleep/talking nonsense, he turned to me and said, "I don't appreciate you doing that sweets" and then promptly rolled over and back into slumber land. I just huffed and used a few choice words myself before going back to sleep. The next day, he didn't remember speaking to me nor saying a word, but he did remember the dream. The rest of the week was about the same plus an added disruption of our dog jumping into bed and stealing all the covers.

Needless to say this threw a wrench into my thought process about babies. I am not ruling it out, but I love sleep way more these days.

Weekly - well, whenever I remember on a Monday check-in

Mind:

One-word description of the workweek: Short (I'm on vaca for Thurs/Fri - can't wait!)

Books I've finished: Started New Moon - and still reading.

News story that stuck with me: The email I got this week isn't national news, but news about the hubs friend's dad and his cancer coming back. They have given him 6 months to a year to live. I am in shock and so sad for his family - I can only imagine what they are going through. Life is short friends - make sure you tell the people you love who much you do.

*NEW* Ear Worm: (Otherwise known as the song stuck in my head this week): Down - the beat is so catchy!

Body:

Workouts this week: After being sick for about 2+ weeks, I am headed back to the gym tonight and trying to get super excited about it...again.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: Painted my nails. I know it sounds silly, but taking time out like that was really nice and they look great - even if they are dark brown. Love them!

Looking forward:
GUSTER! They are in town this week along with my bestie from high school to hang out for the concert and some more trouble. We are thinking about wine tastings, movies and maybe even a Halloween party. Also good news, my SIL is in town as well with my nephew, and I can't wait to see them too! :) Did I mention a short week at work really helps my attitude?

Weekly Check-In

So I totally suck at updating. Here's an update:

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: Yucky
Books I've finished: Started New Moon - so far, pretty good.
News story that stuck with me: Healthcare - as in, why do we pay so much and get so little.
*NEW* Ear Worm: (Otherwise known as the song stuck in my head this week): For some reason a really bad song called Bullet Proof has been stuck in my head. Better yet, the remake with Imogen Heap's song in the background.

Body:
Workouts this week: Being sick = no gym.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: I let myself throw a pity party and then got over it. Best idea yet.

Looking forward:
Fall - it's here and we are thinking about using my holiday this upcoming home to take a day trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway. I can't wait to take some pics of the trees and all the beauty in nature this time of the year. Maybe even pic up some cider. YUM!

Weekly Check In (a little behind)

Sorry I missed a week, but things have been so crazy and I have a feeling it will be nutty until the end of the year. Happy Monday!

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: Fast (as in I hope it flies by)
Books I've finished: n/a
News story that stuck with me: I have been reading mostly about uptown condos shutting down their projects due to lack of funding here in Charlotte - guess the greed and the way too expensive uptown condos finally caught up with everything. Hope people get their deposits back.
*NEW* Ear Worm: (Otherwise known as the song stuck in my head this week): Anything by Neutral Milk Hotel

Body:
Workouts this week: This past Saturday I ran my 5K. It wasn't pretty considering I haven't really been to the gym in about a month, but I ran it and until the time I wanted to finish. I am thinking I might start training for another one in November which is right around the corner.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: I kept a promise to run the race and also started getting up early - seems to help the day go smoother - unfortunately, I was 10 mins late for work today. :(

Looking forward:
We are headed to see my family this upcoming weekend as my oldest nephew turns 6.(geez the years are flying by!) Also thinking we'd head to the aquarium to see some fish.

September 18, 2009

Checking in...

Oops - I am so behind this week. Pet Expo threw everything off. Sorry!

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: BUSY

Books I've finished: Twilight is done - sticking to a magazine for now.

News story that stuck with me: To be honest - I stopped watching the news lately. It is too depressing unless you count the local story of the people who got their car stolen with their dog inside and they found the dog who was reconnected with them - best story of the week if you ask me.

Body:
Workouts this week: ha - no working out and barely eating. Bad week. Oh, and 5K is next weekend. Are you laughing with me or at me at this point?

Spirit:
What I did for myself: This week I set up my Google Calendar so I can get my life and spirit in order. Feeling a little more relaxed.

Looking forward:
Seeing my in-law tonight since their 2 month trip to Canada and a meeting on early Sunday morning. Both shall be an earful of goodness.

Very Soon

This morning on the way to work (running late as usual), I saw a plate on the back of a car that read, Very Soon. So I began to wonder if it was a sign to just remember that very soon, things would change. And once that thought popped into my head, another thought popped in - what could I change to make very soon, be right now? We all get into a place in our lives where we wonder if things will ever be the way we want them to be. It reminds me of another saying that God laughs at our plans. We can try and put together our future goals, but we need to remember the little things that matter right now.

When asked what mattered more - a new car/house/you name it or my marriage, I answered, my marriage mattered the most. If our home or car or what have you blew up tomorrow, my relationship with others matters more. Yes, it would totally suck to live in a tent and have our dogs running the streets as we beg for food/small donations, but we would make it work to get to a better place. (That was worse case scenario, which hopefully won't ever happen).

I've just noticed that when we ask for a blessing, that some of us take it for granted once it comes true. We do we complain about what we are given? And why do we think that bigger and better should come without struggle? We are not handed things because we ask for them. We have to work at them and for more, we have to remember that more work can be required. Nothing comes easy and if it does, we would never appreciate it. Sounds so simple doesn't it? Well, I am trying to remember to be happy for those around me and remember that their road may not be mine, but I have my own path I need to own.

Hopefully all my plans will come true, but if they don't, I hope that what I do get is enough and I'll appreciate it whole heartily.

better late than never

Monday was Labor Day - so I decided to skip and update today.

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: Tired (in general)

Books I've finished: 100 more pages of Twilight; not sure what will be next.

News story that stuck with me: Heard the President will be speaking to the youth of America today.

Body:
Workouts this week: Mostly walking the pups. Got out last night and walked with a friend in her neighborhood for about 2 miles. This fall weather makes me want to be outside 24-7.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: I met with my marketing partner for my small business yesterday which helped me get on track with the next couple of month and events coming up. She is so wonderful!

Looking forward:
Getting everything in order for next week - I have a huge event coming up and need to make sure I am ready. Hard to believe how fast the last part of this year is going.

I hear the secrets that you keep, when you're talking in your sleep

The hubs has a bad habit of talking his sleep. Sometimes you'd think he was wide awake only to find out the next morning, he has no clue saying anything from the night before. I really wish we had a camera to capture this on film, but I think I'll just start documenting it in this blog for the readers enjoyment.

Last night:
I was dead asleep when the hubs jumps out of bed and falls to the floor to do, wait for it... push-ups. I yelled for him to wake up and when he got back in bed, he said he was dreaming that he was in basic training for the military.

Ah, the joys of marrying a sleep-talker. More stories to share on this topic soon!

Light at the end of the tunnel

A friend of mine had a really tough year. She was in the process of selling her home and well, it got the best of her. I remember meeting her for lunch and her telling me about how they had been on the market for over a year, the showings were not going well and feedback was just as bad on the home. To be honest, I didn't understand why she would want to leave her cute home, but you could see it chipping away at her and her livelihood. I promised myself that I would try to not let myself get in that zone should I be in the same shoes; I broke a promise to myself.

Our home went on the market back in September of 2008. We were in the process of moving to California and the housing market was about to crash into foreclosure land. When things didn't work out with our move, we decided we'd keep it on the market, sell and move to another part of town to be out of a wall-sharing years and into our first grown-up home. So here we are almost a year later and if we are to sell our townhouse today, we'd owe on it. I am frustrated, I am mad and I getting depressed. I understand the feeling of stuck my friend felt; not just physically in our neighborhood, but emotionally in this rut. How did I let myself get in this place where the smallest thing sets me off?

I am trying to get myself back into my happy place and this road looks long and narrow. I blame the economy for being so crappy. I blame our president for not helping us who pay our mortgage on time and have nothing to show for it and I blame myself for letting it all get the best of me. So for now, I am going to try and google as many happy, hopefully, don't give up quotes and focus on what I can change, which is my attitude.

p.s. My friend sold her home a few months ago to start the building of her new home when it fell through and the company filed chapter 11. She is now building another new home and living in a apartment making the best of what is yet to come.

Welcome to Monday

Here's the check in for the week.

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: bleh - having a case of the Mondays.

Books I've finished: does a magazine count?

News story that stuck with me: More death this week (another Kennedy) - just sad and depressing really.

Body:
Workouts this week: I got in one day at the gym and the rest was walking or hiking with the pups. I got a reminder this morning that the race is in less than 3 weeks. Time is flying by.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: I got a mani/pedi after a really bad day at work. Things have been really bad at work and I am having a hard time focus. I blame the weather - I always get this way when the weather starts to change. p.s. I chipped off all my nail polish this weekend. Not a usual habit, but just not the best weekend.

Looking forward:
A long weekend coming up. Not anything planned, but ready not to be at work right now.

August 24, 2009

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: Tired (one day of vacation=lots of catching up!)
Books I've finished: Almost done with Twilight - less than 200 pages left and finally liking it a little more.
News story that stuck with me: A recent one I read today about Annie L. (photographer) who spends more than she makes - sounds like it doesn't matter who you are, this entire nation has money issues.

Body:
Workouts this week: I got 3 days of working out last week - one day in strength class and two days running. I missed out on my long run yesterday due to travel, and well - being lazy. Looks like I will making up for it this week - and all the crappy food I ate this past weekend.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: I took Friday off to enjoy some time with the hubs before heading out of town. It was so nice to sleep in.

Looking forward:
Getting our home sold. We are hoping to be out of their before the end of this year - both of us are just ready to move on in every sense of that word.

August 17, 2009

It's that time again...Weekly Check-In

Mind:
One-word description of the workweek: Roller-coaster (lots of things in the fire this week)

Books I've finished: Still on Twilight - but half way through.

News story that stuck with me: Michael Vick making a comeback in football by joining the Philly Eagles. As mean as this sounds, I am happy to know that I am not the only one who doesn't think he should ever play again. I can't let go of the fact of all the horrible things he did to helpless animals. If I did what he did, I would be fired and not asked to show my face again. It is amazing that we allow people to abuse animals, children or even our elderly. We cannot blame these traits on our up-bringing or even our environments. We make choices everyday and well mine is to be kind to others, human or animal. I know that people will not agree with me, but I don't think that Vick has served his time considering the million dollar pay check he'll be taking home at the end of the day. Yes, I am passionate about this topic, but I also know that complaining isn't going to make it go away. I volunteer my time/photography with a local rescue group and hear some really heartbreaking stories. And so far, the success stories are pouring in weekly. We should all do our part to clean up this world from such hatred.

Body:
Workouts this week: I got one day in last week and then got terribly sick. Add in puking too. Back on the wagon this week hopefully with a workout this evening and a run scheduled for tomorrow. The race will be here before I know it.

Spirit:
What I did for myself: I gave myself a weekend to relax and rest up which I think my body needed.

Looking forward: A rescheduled trip to Atlanta this weekend. Beyond that, any good news this week brings. Have a good week and remember to be kind to others. It isn't hard to smile at others and it could be catchy!

August 10, 2009

Weekly Check-In

Mind
One-word description of the workweek: Patient
Books I've finished: Still on Twilight - been mostly busy with editing pics.
News story that stuck with me: Since we cut cable and I rarely turn on the TV, most of the news I get is via Twitter - sad, I know. Two stories of the week - the death of John Hughes (Pretty in Pink will never be the same) and the dog born with a heart on it (huge dog-lover here).

Body
Workouts this week: I worked out 5 days last week. (that wasn't a typo!) That included a one hour workout session on Friday. 10K will be here in before I know it. Staying on track with not over eating, and hoping I see a difference in my body in the next couple of weeks.

Spirit
What I did for myself: Might seem silly but I worked on my other website this weekend. I still have a long way to go, but I am so proud of myself for making time to get it going. All this working out and pushing myself is also helping me get into a better place in my head. I can see how people get addicted to exercise.

Side note: Adding a new Category: Looking forward to - this weekend I am headed to Atlanta to see my bro, SIL and also my nephews. I can't wait to spend some quality time with them! Also looking forward to planning our trip to Canada next summer - anyone want to join?

August 5, 2009

What was I thinking?

Do you ever find yourself talking in circles with friends? Like having the same conversations, regardless of the time of the year or how long it has been since you last saw them? This was me and friend who I saw last weekend. We both seem to gravitate towards the part of the conversation to be about weight and the gain we both suffer from. Add in all the pretty clothes we both have in our closets we can't wear anymore either. It's mostly our own faults due to the ridiculous beer and wine availability. So we decided to make a change. We decided to sign up for a 10k. Did you blink? Thinking you saw a typo, like maybe it should have read 5k? No, you read that correctly. In less than eight weeks, we will be running a race here in Charlotte that starts at 7:45am. So yes, I signed up for a really really long race that takes place in less than eight weeks and also really really early in the morning (if you know me, I am not a morning person ever).

Did I add that we have a six day workout week? I've been hitting the gym about once to none a week since the wedding over a year ago. I will say that I am lucky not to be starting from ground zero, but I don't feel far from it. The funny part about all this, is that I believe I can do it. I want to give it a try. I don't think I will be able to run the whole thing straight through, but I know due to my past 5k races (all of 3), that I can do at least half of it - so how bad will the last 3 miles be...riiiiiiiiight? Ha.

Here's what we have for training set up so far this week:
Monday: Weight training
Tuesday: Run 2.5 miles
Wednesday: Weight training
Thursday: Run 2.5 miles
Friday: Cross Train/Weights
Saturday: Day of REST
Sunday: Long run

So far I have two days behind me and a sore body to show for it. I also started drinking protein shakes and I won't lie that even though it says chocolate flavor, it tastes like the aluminum wrapper the chocolate bar comes in. I snack throughout the day, so hopefully this will get my post wedding weight off. I am also going to really push myself to have more water. I got some True Orange to help flavor my water to make it go down easier.

Some may call me crazy, some may even call me a little strange for diving into such a massive task, but when life isn't changing, you have to figure out a way to shake it up and try again. Here's to training and running my first ever 10k.

August 3, 2009

Weekly Check-In

Mind
One-word description of the workweek: Awkward
Books I've finished: what's a book? Does a CB catalogue count?
News story that stuck with me: the economy and how people get so negative about it; even when they have 5 kids - I don't see the point on complaining about it, unless you want to make a difference.

Body
Workouts this week: You ready for some big news? I ran 2.5 miles last week (in one take) and really thinking hard about signing up to join my friend in a 10K in about 8 weeks. Am I crazy? I am starting to think more asking for punishment.

Spirit
What I did for myself: with the hubs out of town, I decided to splurge on a diet of pizza and Ben and Jerry's - also lots of chick-flicks. Not the best, but it was fun while it lasted.

Weekly Check-in

About to walk out the door for my wonderful weekly allergy shots - but didn't want to forget to check in. :)

Mind
One-word description of the workweek: sleep (as in I need more of it)
Books I've finished: Haven't read any this past week so n/a
News story that stuck with me: Mostly about the President and health care - it's all up in the air and it should just be affordable - not sure how we'll make it happen.

Body
Workouts this week: I have not worked out exact walking the dogs. I have started to eat 100% better and that is really helping spring me forward to getting back on track.

Spirit
What I did for myself: I took time out to learn more about photography. I also caved and bought an iPhone. :)

Why do you make me stay here?

Have you ever felt like a part of a small group of really cool people? This past Sunday, the hubs and I went up to Chapel Hill, NC for Merge Fest. Merge is a record label based in NC who signed some really good indie bands and every five years, has a blow out to celebrate a few more years of signing killer bands. Although we wanted to attend all weekend (it runs Thursday through Sunday evening), we had life going on, so we decided on a last minute road trip for the final night.

I really wish I could have seen Spoon, but I was excited to know that we would get to see She & Him. If you haven't heard of this group, you may not be alone. She & Him is made up of M. Ward and Zoey Deschanel; a musician and an actor. I've added a link to another blog with an article about Zoey and a video so you can be graced with her voice. I will admit that like the writer of this article, I too have a girl crush on Zoey.

p.s. If you like Deathcab for Cutie, you might also know that Zoey and the lead singer are engaged. Enjoy!

I decided to clean this blog up a little and make it pretty. Hope you enjoy the changes. :)

Weekly Check-In

Look - I actually got this one in on a Monday! :)

Mind
One-word description of the workweek: Crazy (looks like I have lots of editing to do while taking care of the house for week 2 of the hubs play)
Books I've finished: Still reading Twilight - slowly
News story that stuck with me: the economy and my job. Everything is still up in the air due to the nature of our business, but otherwise no one knows what the future holds.

Body
Workouts this week: going to run if it kills me. Also hitting the store tonight to get all my meals for the week set in stone. Back to eating better begins.

Spirit
What I did for myself: I had a really good conversation with my best friend in San Fran. Cleared my head and got some good advice. I wish she lived closer.

July 17, 2009

Lost and (not) Gone Forever

This past week, it was brought to my attention that my favorite band will be headed my way in a few months. I read an article that summed up my emotion exactly on this upcoming tour and hopes of a new album.

"But honestly all it takes for me to get excited about a new Guster album is to know that it is being made. "

Just knowing they are headed here and that new songs will come with, makes me as excited as a guy watching adult videos. Yes, a little much for the TMI (to much information) visual, but this is Guster we are talking about here. I saw them back in the 90's when I walked up to the stage (only three of us were standing around to see them) and they were excited to know I heard of this Boston-based band down here in the south.

This was the band that I hung out with in Charleston during a day long festival. I saw them in multiple cities and venues and met awesome people because they sang wonderful music. I listened to them on long car rides to Orlando from NC and even when I broke up with a boyfriend to help deal with letting crappy things go. They remind me of the fall season when I was in college and then even out of college pretending to be in college at one of their campus events. They helped me celebrate a milestone birthday a few years ago. And I puffy heart my logo long sleeved Guster tee. So, when the email came about to say they would be here in my town, I raced online to get my ticket to have the chance to have yet another memory made of my favorite band. So needless to say (yes, I'm a dork) but a ticker should be added as the countdown to October begins.

What Not to Date

Names have been changed to protect the guilty.

I like to think of myself as normal. I don't really do anything too crazy or irrational, unless you happen to put a cheesecake in front of me. The same can be said about my dating habits before I met my husband. I'd heard about girls dating guys who were in relationships, or even married, but that was never my approach. I also found myself not interested in friendships with these sort of girls. It just seemed like too much trouble. I'll preface this comment with saying that I have a bad habit of picking up strays, even though in the last couple of years, I have backed away from these so-called projects. That was all true until I found myself stuck.

It all went down on a Sunday afternoon over a pedi. You never think anything bad could happen over nail polish, but it did. The worst part is when they have you by the feet, you can't really run. I watched someone who I bearly knew call a guy on repeat only to get voicemail. Not twice, but 20 times. I didn't want to think that someone would actually act this way but it all unraveled beside my soak tub. She was upset that her relationship had no closure and instead of letting go, she was holding on to dear life via text message and voicemail. It was sad really.

I learned something that day. Make sure when going to get a pedi with someone, that the person is A. Sobber, B. More than just someone you say hi to in the office and C. Sane.

Weekly Check-In

I started to write this on Monday, but the day got away from me. It's Wednesday for now, but here's my check in.

Mind
One-word description of the workweek: Busy (I am on dog duty due to Hubs play starting and also editing for my clients and updating the blog)
Books I've finished: I started reading Twilight; yes I am a sucker like everyone else. So far it is pretty good.
News story that stuck with me: Rubber Sidewalks; they are putting them all over town and everyone is complaining about cost.

Body
Workouts this week: I suck. I need to figure out a way to get back in shape. I hate my body like I hate my allergy shots. Time to make a plan and stick with it.

Spirit
What I did for myself: New hair makes me happy. Now working on a life action plan.

July 7, 2009

Weekly Check-In

A day late, a dollar short. Sorry!

Mind
One-word description of the workweek: MIA (Yes, I know it isn't a word, but I have beach brain this week due to a planned vacation at the end of the week)

Books I've finished: What's a book? I need to figure out what I will read at the beach. (see my theme here?) :)

News story that stuck with me: Michael Jackson funeral and CA handing out IOUs instead of tax returns. Both sad and scary since I heard that CA is paying for MJ's funeral cost. (Might not be a smart idea folks!); Also the Gaffney Killer (glad they got him).

Body
Workouts this week: I ran once last week and walked the dogs a few times. Otherwise I need to figure out a workout plan and get on it ASAP.

Spirit
What I did for myself: Pedi/Mani this past weekend was totally needed. Also scheduled a haircut to pamper myself later this week. Can't wait for a new hairstyle!

One of Those Days (warning - foul language within)

Everyone has a day where they think they can't. I have been in that boat and sailing for about two weeks now. My photography business started with a bang. I have been able to stay booked and even get clients for upcoming shoots to fill my portfolio like it's nobodies business. The problem is that my full time life keeps getting in the way. Add second guessing myself to the list as well. I am so behind in editing I have no idea where to begin. The stress paralyzes me.

So last night I started working on a timeline to get pictures edited and the blog updated. I know everyone goes through this and I am lucky to have another job that pays the bills, but I worry that I am not giving everything I can to this business. I worry that like the small business statistic quotes, I'll be out of business before I even get it off the ground.

This morning I found a tweet about Ten Solutions To Running a Good Business. Here's the last bit of advice it offered:

Limit your time with nay-sayers and doom & gloomers. They are not productive. Stay on point and do not let anyone tell you that it is impossible or that it can’t be done or that you are wasting your time.

That, gentle reader, is bullshit.

Keep yourself motivated by creating new things and being busy. A person who is busy cannot make time to be depressed. Depression is for those going nowhere (clinical depression is a disease that should be treated… I am referring to people who are always negative and on a mission to bring you down.

They are everywhere. Everywhere! Shut them out.

Don’t discuss what you don’t have, frame your language and your efforts toward what you do have. Stay focused on the essentials of your business and your art: making pictures and showing them to people.

Look… there are always going to be challenging times. Some more than others. Refuse to be brought down to the failure group… the hopeless tribe of “it’s all over… whine whine whine.”

After reading this a few times and then about 100 more times, I decided that I need to stay in the present and do something about it. Baby steps are what I need to focus on. I am learning that business, like my life, is all about patience. If I remember to enjoy the little moments, the rest of the pieces will fall into place. So no, I am not giving up, but I think it is time to put some sweat and stop all the tears. It can happen and it will, I just have to believe it so.

Checking In

I found this on a blog and thought I would like to try and do this also. It is a great way to report and keep track of life in general. A topic popped into my head this morning on the way to work that I hope to write about next time - "Dating Don't Do." You can thank a late night at a bar, a few drinks and a good conversation with a friend to bring this topic about. But for now:

"Just a round-up of my life over the week to keep me honest, and satisfy that need for voyeurism that forces you to read my blog."

Mind
One-word description of the workweek: loaded
Books I've finished: I started Julie and Julia/My Sister's Keeper - not sure I will finish either any time soon.
News story that stuck with me: Jon & Kate Plus 8 divorcing; Farrah Fawcett--dead!; Michael Jackson--dead! Oxy-Clean Guy --dead! What a week.

Body
Workouts this week: Trying for 3.
Nutritional cheats: Stupid cheese fries and beer. It was late too. Still beating myself up for it.

Spirit
What I did for myself: I went out on a girl's night and stayed out way past my bedtime. I also got the house super clean for not only the week, but a showing. Still crossing fingers we sell our townhome.

Acting His Way Out of a Paper Bag

A little background: The hubs went to college for drama that takes place on a stage, not the Jon and Kate Plus Eight kind. He got his diploma and moved back east after working odd jobs including one in the magazine industry. Once he set up shop in North Carolina, he went into HR. HR is tricky, but a lot like being a drama major. You deal with people, and well, from my experience, people can be crazy. After his company downsized and the 11pm phone calls to India stopped in our home, he started searching for the next big thing. They came in three little packages that looked promising, but fell short of even a glimpse to propel up the corporate ladder.

In our current economy, when one find themselves out of work, I mean a career, best thing to do reinvent themselves. Being the supportive wife I try really hard to be, we took the team approach to finding ones true calling. It came in forms of meeting at the coffeehouse for brainstorming sessions, to evening with lots of adult beverages and word vomiting into the wee hours of the night. But what came next, neither of us saw coming. A local play was short on staff, and well, I mentioned that the hubs could step in to help. Yes, I know it was selfish to volunteer his endless hours to job surf on the Internet, but we both agreed in previous weeks that networking would be key to landing a cube back in Corporate America.

Last Tuesday evening it clicked. He auditioned and got the part; *poof readers, met my hubs the actor. Can you tell I am like a proud mother who's kid got the lead role in his school play? Well, it isn't the lead, but enough speaking parts and fast changes to make your head spin. In less than one month, the hubs will be back doing what he actually got his degree in, which not most people can say these days. Hopefully this is lead to bigger and better things, but in the meantime, we plan to just soak up the good news for a change.

All You Need Is...

"Hope that one tragic loss does not mean another. Hope in always trusting the bigger plan & pulling up by the bootstraps. Hope in a purpose is not a clear-laid path."

Last year was really hard. We decided we wanted to move to California, and well - it didn't happen. In October my husband moved to South San Fran, while I packed up a house and then a moving truck. I ate at all my favorite places, said goodbye to my brother and his family, and wrote off the city I came to right after graduation for a retail management position. I was ready to leave, to start over. The afternoon the moving truck came and picked up all our stuff was the day the bottom fell out. I got a phone call an hour after they left to let me know that something was wrong. Last year was when the economy started to tank, really bad. My husband was told that all new positions were eliminated and that he could go back to the Carolinas. This is the part where you can only imagine the panic, the stress and well the tears that our dream to start a new chapter out west would never be written.

The next few days where really a blur. I called my manager and asked for my job back, I called the moving company and asked for our stuff to come back, we called the apartment building to get out of our crazy lease, and then I turned to hope that everything would work out in the end. That was when I learned that everything can be reversed. I put on a smile when I greeted my husband at the airport who was numb. We went to our home that was all clean and clear of any of our belongings. We got our dogs and headed south to see the his parents. We spend that weekend getting our lives in order. Getting our address updated (again), emailing my contacts in CA to let them know I would not be coming for an interview and then calling my best friend to say something I didn't want to say; they we were not moving. All I wanted to do was to crawl under a rock and never come out again. I felt like I failed.

Over the next few months, it didn't get better. I am still surprised that my friends welcomed me with open arms and my grumpy attitude. The holidays came and we spend our first time without my in-laws/extended family who were in California visiting my husband's sister. We both just wanted to blink and have 2008 end. New Years was when things really started to take a turn. We got our pride back and rang in the season with a hope that next year, 2009 would be our year.

So far, things have not been perfect, but they are good. We have a roof over our heads, food on the table, one income to keep us going and well, we have a strong marriage to lean on. Things are not always easy, but I do have hope that things will be okay. We'll get a bigger place without having to share walls, my husband will find another job and we'll get to start a family. It might not happen right away, but no matter what, we made it to the other side in one piece and today, that is what counts.

What's Next?

On the way to work today, I heard a song that I've heard a million times before, but for some reason, today it rang true to my current situation. I've been surfing through blogs reading everything from divorce to new recipes. And then it hit me - where is my life going and why does it seem like everyone else has a plan?

This year (so far) hasn't been the best nor the worst. Here's a short list:
* One year of marriage :)
* Two years of my husband searching for work and coming up empty :(
* Eight months of our town home on the market :(
* A few month of us starting a small business :)
* Almost eight years down the part-time retail drain; I got laid off last month :(
* A month after our boxer got Cancer and had surgery (Stage 2) :(

I am trying my best to count as many blessings as I can, but lately, even that gets really hard to do. I just feel like we are stuck and can't move forward. I worry that things will always be this way and while we try for change - everyone else around us will move forward while we struggle to stay a float. How did we get here? Can't blame a president or an economy; it is what it is. Trying to figure out how to make the best out of a situation can be exhausting. Trying to find more tricks to pull out of my sleeve isn't working here. So what is next? I have no clue, but I will keep hoping for the best.

So, I've been thinking...

Every time I hear someone say "so, I've been thinking", or it comes out of my mouth, it still reminds me of my college boyfriend breaking up with me; but that's another story for another time. I recently heard a really great quote: "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." - Albert Einstein

The last week has been tough (maybe due more to the fact that daylights saving took an hour of my sleep) mostly due to the economy. I have been trying really hard to think of ways or changes to our current lives that could make a difference down the road. And during this day and age, that concept is even harder to come by. So I am left with a few ideas and a ton of questions. There are fewer and fewer opportunities, but there are still needs out there.

I guess that doesn't help to be vague, but when you have lots of swirl in your head, you tend to try and wrap your arms around it and hang tight until something seems falls into place. I guess I need to keep pondering about my leap of faith. It might be a good idea on paper - but in real life, it scares the crap out of me. Off to do more research.

You Pick

Here's a poll on what is the worst sound to ever wake up to:
(a) An alarm clock beeping at the crack of dawn
(b) A puking dog who manages to hit the curtains and his bed with his vomit
or (c) A snoring spouse who should be called a lumberjack due to the logs he was sawing in his sleep right in your ear.

Welcome to my week and the many things that make me think that strong coffee was created for mornings such as these scenarios mentioned above. I just wonder what life will be like if we decided to throw a kid into the mix. Pray for me.

The Ring (and I don't mean the movie)

Most people who get engaged have a fabulous story on how they picked out a ring. This morning, I remembered how my brother went about picking one out for my sister-in-law. When I turned seventeen, I made a pilgrimage back to the homeland of sand and camels to see my grandmothers, aunts and cousins - plus a few family friends. Flying isn't my forte, but I survived a puke-filled flight of 14 hours to arrive in the place that I lived for the first 5.5 years of my life. Before this journey ever started, my brother asked me to accept a very important task; to find his future wife a ring. He handed me a wad of a money that only a 24-year old could come up with on a college TA salary, and sent me on my way.

There I was, on a plane by myself for the first time ever flying to another country with only one suitcase (stuffed like an olive with what I thought were my most awesomest outfits - it was the 90s so you can use your imagination), a backpack (which held the cash) and my snow-white teddy bear (I needed a companion for this trip). Once I landed, kissed the ground and made my way through customs, I enjoyed my time looking for a ring that would be presented to my future family member.

I hate to admit it, but the trip was a bust. My aunt and I spent time going all over town looking for the right ring. To tell the the truth, years later, I am glad my brother picked out the ring he wanted to present. I remember getting my ring and all the memories that are tied to the diamond and silver band. I will never forget the moment and how it felt to know the man I would eventually call my husband would pick out something so special and from his heart (well, that and the store that sold it to him). And when my sister-in-law pulled out her engagement band, this past year, (which was replaced on their 10-year anniversary with another band and bigger diamonds), you could see the love she still held on to the little piece of jewelry given to her years ago. I knew then it meant more to her than anything I could have ever picked out.

Maybe it's just me

Growing up, I didn't learn a lot from my mother. She wasn't fancy, but very practical. Every Friday night, before we headed out the house to services at Temple, she got all dressed up, put on her finest jewelry, dabbed on some perfume and colored up her face. I thought this was so magical for the sake that a majority of the time, she only put lotion on to keep her face wrinkle-free from the sun.

Due to this one week night transformation, I didn't learn that some woman wear make-up everyday, including just to run out to the grocery store. I didn't learn to stand up straight and walk in high-heeled shoes without looking like a Clydesdale on a beer commercials. I thought that everyone believed in this sort of behavior; I was wrong.

In the last couple of years, beside being called natural due to my chapstick only make-up, I have made subtle changes to try and fit back into the girly-society. When shopping for shoes, I reach for kitten or wedged heels for my corporate world career; walking in anything else makes me fall over as soon as I take my first steps or my feet rebel with a blister. If I can get myself out of bed at a decent hour in the morning, I remember to at least give mascara, eye shadow and even eyeliner a run for its money. I have been known to even splurge on concealer to cover up my puffy black circles under my eyes. I can clean up nicely.

The best way to sum up my new way of thinking came from a friend's ubber southern mother; always step out of the house like you are ready to bump into your ex-boyfriends/husbands, ex-girlfriend or ex-wife - dressed your best and have a face full of makeup. I don't always follow this rule, but for the most part, it speaks volumes.

Just thinking

Life isn't always the way you plan it to be/go. During this time when my generation deals with an economy that leaves something to be desired, I find that looking for happiness in the smallest places helps get one through the day. I got a "thought of the day" email and it reminds me that life isn't always about fate, sometimes we have to take it into our own hands and make something out of it. So even when you feel like you can't keep going - think about this:

“Don't wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel, stride down there and light the bloody thing yourself. “ -Dara Henderson Writer

What else would I do on a Saturday?

A friend/co-worker who I happened to meet in my prior postion, is getting married this year. Being a veteran, she asked me for help or suggestions. This made me laugh on the inside, while feeling a bit of pride that the anti-bride that I was, would be asked to assist. I pulled up all my saved Internet wedding sites (this gal doesn't scrapbook); from invites, to local bridal shops to reception ideas. She grinned from ear to ear and gobbled up all the information. And before I knew it, I was sitting in a bridal shop, helping pick out her wedding gown.

If you back track to my dress shopping experience, it brings up memories of a boring, pain in the you know what and also down-right costly adventure. I ended up running into a place at the mall, picked up what could be a bridesmaid dress and called it a day. But to have a part in her wedding plans, was a nice excuse to see what I missed out on.

I will say it was like playing dress up, but without me getting sweaty hopping into and out of huge ball gowns. I loved it! And the scary part of it all, so did she; even found two gowns - one modern and one elegant yet classy. The other fun part of the day was watching all the other brides pick out their dresses. We got to see all walks of life and I mean all kinds of brides prance behind close doors, put on the dress of their dreams and then come out to model it in front of family and well strangers like me.

Overall, I'd rate last Saturday as a 8 out of 10 stars in amusement. Even in a crappy economy, at least one industry will never fail nor go belly up. To the brides.

A New Start

2008 was a pretty crappy year. Jobs came and went, a planned cross-country move fell through, and well, the economy tanked. The only good thing that came out of 2008, was our wedding. Marriage has been a good lesson for the both of us. We lean on it, count on it and even call it the glue that holds us together when everything else goes to h-e-double-hockey-stick in a hand basket. So as much as there was a little moment of happiness, I am happy to report that I could not be any happier that we can put 2008 behind and take on 2009 with a hope for change.

With that, here's a list of resolutions that I would like to propose for 2009.
In no particular order and could be read as a wish list of sorts:
* Sell our home
* Run a few races
* Lose a few pounds
* Work on my organizational skills
* Return calls in a timely manner
* Walk the dogs more
* Travel, even if it means just up the street
* Save more, spend less

Out with the old and in with the new. Welcome 2009 - we've been waiting for you.
